SPARTA, NJ – A Sparta man is facing drunk driving charges after crossing into the opposite lane and crashing into a Vernon woman.  On May 26, around 7 p.m. Sparta officers went to the scene of the accident on West Shore Trail, police said.

David Bauer, 59 had crashed his gray Ford Fusion into Maria Oliveira.  Oliveira had two passengers in her black Mazda CX, a 76-year-old woman and an eight-year-old girl.  Both passengers complained of pain but neither sought treatment at the scene, police said.

Police found Bauer had been drinking before the accident.  He was brought to Sparta Police Department Headquarters for field sobriety testing.  He was then charged with careless deriving, driving with an expired driver’s license, windshield obstruction, failure to keep right and DWI, police said.

Bauer was given a court date and released to a sober adult.  Both vehicles had moderate damage and had to be towed from the scene, according to police.
