SPARTA, NJ – A Sparta man faces drunk driving charges after his car was found on the front lawn of a home on Douglas Drive.  On June 15 around 11:45 p.m. Cpl. Arlene Lippencott went to the home at the intersection of Green Road to fine a grey Jeep Compass abandon in the yard, police said.

Lippencott determined the car was owned by Tarek Al-Aydi, 52.  She and Officer John Poon went to Al-Aydi’s home.  Al-Aydi said he knew his car was left on the lawn on Douglas Drive.  He said he walked home and was planning to contact AAA towing later, police said.

While speaking with Al-Aydi the officer smelled alcohol on his breath.  Al-Aydi said he had a few drinks before dinner earlier in the night.  He refused to perform field sobriety tests and was taken into custody, police said.

Al-Aydi was brought to Sparta Police Department Headquarters for processing.  After he was breath tested, Al-Aydi was charged with several DWI offenses as well as leaving the scene of an accident according to police.  He was given a court date and released to a sober adult.

Al-Aydi’s car was removed from the lawn and impounded for the mandatory 12 hours.
