SPARTA, NJ – A seven-year old injured his wrist when a Sparta woman crashed into a school bus at 8:15 a.m. Police responded to Lafayette Road on November 26. Rita McCormick, 60 had done extensive damage to her black Honda when she hit the bus, police said.
McCormick’s car had to be towed but the bus was able to be driven from the scene. The bus driver complained of back pain. Both the driver and the student were treated at the scene but police said they were going to be treated by their own doctors.
When Sparta Cpl. Joe Antonello spoke with McCormick he found she had been drinking alcohol before the accident. McCormick was given field sobriety tests and then taken into custody, police said.
McCormick was processed at Sparta Police Department Headquarters. After being breath tested she was charged with DWI, reckless driving and two counts of assault by auto. She was given a court date and released to a sober adult.
