SPARTA, NJ – A Wantage man took down a utility pole with his car in a drunk driving accident on White Lake Road. Sparta Sgt. Joe Pensado reported the accident. Sparta Cpl. Dan Elig arrived to take over the investigation of the one car accident on March 1 around 11 p.m. police report.
Elig asked the driver Richard Luciano, 35, what happened. Luciano told the officer he had drifted across the fog line into the snow and lost control of his car, running into a utility pole and a fence, police say.
Luciano complained of pain in his shin. He was accessed at the scene by the Sparta First Aid Squad but then refused further treatment. Elig had Luciano perform field sobriety tests and then took him into custody, according to police.
At the Sparta Police Department headquarters Luciano was breath tested and then charged with driving while intoxicated, careless driving, DWI in a school zone and failure to maintain lane. He was given a court date and released to a sober adult
