SPARTA, NJ- The number one seed Sparta boys basketball took down ninth seed Northern Highlands on Wednesday, 60-53 in the quarterfinal round of the NJSIAA North 1, Group 3 tournament.
It was more than five minutes into the game before either team put up a point. They were nearly even at the end of the first quarter, 13-11. Sparta broke out as Aidan Mastandrea found his shot. They went into the half up 33-23.
The Highlanders stormed back in the third putting up 19, holding the Spartans to seven. Sparta regained their footing adding 19 to get to the final buzzer with a seven point lead.
Mastandrea had 21 points with four 2-pointers, three 3s and four foul shots.
Colby Plotts and Dean Alkovic each put up 11. Mike Piwko added nine dropping in seven free throws. Rasir Scott and Luke Szabo each added four in a game when every point mattered.
The 16-9 Sparta boys will host 13 seed Teaneck on Friday at 7 p.m. in the semifinal game. As the top seed they will hold home advantage through to the finals.
