SPARTA, NJ –Top ranked Sparta High School football moved past number eight seed Nutley on Friday 54-21 in the NJSIAA Section 2, Group 3 quarterfinals.  Students wearing Santa hats and holiday gear packed the stands at Cassels Field on Friday night, despite the cold temperatures.

Austen Frattura threw for 285 yards on 11 completions, good for five TDs.  Colby Plotts had three catches for 92 yards and two trips to the endzone.

James Hogle snagged two passes for 81 yards and a six points.  Frattura connected with Brendan Cina four times for 60 yards.  Frattura aired one to Tyler Szabo for 23 yards and a touchdown.  Austin Castorina also grabbed a pass for 29 yards and a touchdown.

The story for Castorina was on the ground, covering 243 yards on 20 carries for three trips across the goal line.

On defense, Nick Broccoletti had two interceptions and a recovered a fumble with four big tackles.  Dominick Gigantelli had six tackles.

Joe Batton and Billy Quinn had a sack.  Batton also forced a Raider fumble. 

Vin DeSimone had six extra points.  One kick was blocked early in the first quarter.  An attempt at a two-point conversion was thwarted by Nutley as well. 

Sparta’s record stands at 9-1.  They will host West Essex, ranked fourth in the semifinal round on Friday, November 15.
