HACKETTSTOWN, NJ- The Sparta girls basketball team earned the tri county championship on Friday at Centenary College, beating Hunterdon Central 58-44.

The teams had a dozen each in the first quarter.  Sparta was up by one at the half.  Holding Hunterdon Central to five in the third, the Spartans put up 16 for a 12 point lead.  Hunterdon Central rally putting up 13 but it was not enough to close the gap.

Three freshmen put up 45 points; Brynn McCurry had 20, Ally Sweeney put up 13 and Bailey Chapman scored 12.

McCurry also grabbed eight rebounds, had six assists, a block and two steals.

Sweeney dropped in six free throws and pulled down four rebounds.

Chapman had one inside the paint, one from three point land and seven from the foul line.

With a combined 13 points, Alexa Acker and Mason Munier added to the win.

The girls will play in the first round of the NJSIAA North 1, Group 3 tournament on Monday, March 2.  Sparta, ranked third will host 14 seed Morris Hills at 5 p.m.
