SPARTA, NJ – Sparta High School football dominated Jefferson on Friday night, playing under the lights at Cassels field. The final tally was 62-0.
The first cold night of the season did not keep the crowds away. Orange was the color for the night with both teams’ student sections showing support for Dover in the wake of the loss of a young man walking home after a football game.
Jefferson would only get one first down, coming on their first possession of the game, in the first half against Sparta’s defense.
Austen Frattura had four touchdown passes, going to the air nine times for 232 yards. Brendan Cina had four catches for 134 yards and three touchdowns. Frattura connected with Tyler Szabo twice for 72 yards and six points. James Hogle caught two for 20 yards and Colby Plotts had a six yard catch.
Sparta was equally productive on the ground. Austin Castorina had 18 points and covered 211 yards on 15 carries. Sam Esposito had a touchdown moving the ball 60 yards on 10 carries. Michael McGovern put up six points for Sparta with five carries for 33 yards.
Sparta defense had three interceptions; Nick Remo, Noah Faria and Nick Broccoletti each interrupting Falcon’s progress. Matthew Strubble gave Jefferson’s QB trouble with two sack. Joe Batton also had a sack. Sam Bushey was busy with nine tackles.
Vin DeSimone was good for eight of nine extra points.
Sparta cheerleaders got the crowd on their feet. The Marching Spartans, with their award winning Queen program, was also enjoyed loud support from the stands.
Sparta is now 5-1. The Spartans will play at Vernon nest Friday night with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
