SPARTA, NJ - The Sparta High School girls tennis team just completed a very successful season. The varsity team complied an impressive record of 12-3, while the JV squad finished with an equally successful season of 9-2. Led by Coach Andrew Lowery and assistant coach Rick Poots, the varsity team was undefeated in their pursuit of the NJAC Freedom division conference title.

Coach Andrew Lowery said, “I couldn't be more proud of the girls this year, bringing home the conference title again and advancing to the sectional finals for the first time in more than two decades. The improvement during the year is indicative of the commitment to excellence that they demonstrate every day, while at the same time having a great time together as teammates. Although tennis is a sport of individual and partnered contributions, this group always acted like a team, supporting each other through the good and the bad, and working towards a common goal to represent our school and community in stellar fashion."

The varsity team took third in the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex County Tournament. Each position advanced to the semi-finals of the tournament.

In state tournament play, the team defeated High Point and West Essex before playing in the North 1, Group 2 Finals against Demarest. Despite a hard fought battle, the Sparta girls came up short against the eventual Group 2 State champion.

The team enjoyed some individual success as well; First Singles player Alexa Matkiwsky, sophomore, qualified for the state singles tournament for her second year in a row. And the First Doubles pair of Paige Markvicka, senior captain and Gabby Canzoniero, sophomore, qualified for the state doubles tournament.

Junior captain Jenna Bargfrede said, “This season was one of our best seasons with some of the best people”.

The girls wrapped up their strong season at home Monday, October 21 with a 4-1 victory over Randolph, avenging one of their few losses from earlier in the season. The match was also Senior Day which honored Markvicka, Deanna Lubertazzo and Becca Miller.

The team will return most of the starting line-up in 2020 including First Singles Matkiwsky, Second Singles Reagan Rech, Third Singles Jenna Bargfrede, First Doubles player Canzoniero, Second Doubles Jordan Bucenic and Sarah Bargfrede and varsity alternates Sam Coleman and Charlotte Putnam. The team and coaches look forward to another winning season.

The team and coaches thanked the Sparta community for contributing to both the car wash fundraiser at Mohawk Avenue School as well as the can-shake fundraiser outside Stop n Shop.
