SPARTA, NJ – After pushing through a tough schedule in 2018-2019 and dealing with injuries throughout the season, Sparta High School wrestling coach Frank Battaglia is looking forward to the upcoming season, his ninth as head coach.

The seasoned team has 20 returning wrestlers, eight of whom are seniors.  Seven newcomers will be joining the varsity team on the mat this season.

“Excited to see how our experienced wrestlers complete this year as well as our younger wrestlers,” Battaglia said.

Battaglia said his preliminary line up is:

  • 120  lbs Nick Yannuzelli
  • 132 lbs Spencer Stewart
  • 138 lbs Garrett Stewart
  • 145 lbs Nick Hwang
  • 152 lbs Troy Schmitzer
  • 160 lbs Parker Williamson
  • 170 lbs Dominick Gigantelli
  • 195 lbs Jack Pryce
  • 220 lbs Billy Quinn
  • 285 lbs Joe Liotta

Additional returning wrestlers; Cassius Battaglia, Julian Couto, Chase Geer, Peter Cofrancesco, Pedro Colon, Paul Shumlas, Brandon Smith, Robert L’Abbate, Wyatt Coombs.

Additional newcomers; Ryan Lee, Blake Brodersen, Eric Dau, Nick Castorina, Robert Cerra, Cullen Bryne.

“We’ll look to fill in some of our gaps and be able to compete in the state tournament,” Battaglia said. 

When asked about which teams they will be watching in their division, Battaglia said, “All of them.”

Dan Trappe and John Procopio return as assistant coaches.

The 2019-2020 captains are Garrett Stewart, Cooper Stewart, Spencer Stewart, Troy Schmitzer, Nick Hwang and honorary captain Cassius Battaglia.
