STOCKHOLM, NJ-The Sparta Jefferson United ice hockey team earned their first win of the season, shutting out High Point 7-0 in the first round of the Sussex Cup on December 26.  The annual tournament for bragging rights and the milk jug trophy is played at Skylands Ice World.

SJU goalie Logan Hanek earned the shutout with 19 saves.

The game looked like it could go either way through the second period.  Neither team put a puck in the net in the first period.  SJU took the 1-0 lead in the second on a goal from defenseman Matt Espinoza.  It was a power play goal on the assist from senior Alex Cohen.

The game blew open in the third period with six goals in just over seven minutes.

Four goals and an assist came from junior James Battaglia.  Cohen had a goal and three assists.  Junior Matthew Francescutto added a girl and three assists as well.

SJU will take on Vernon for the championship on New Year’s Eve at noon.
