Routine Motor Vehicle Stop Results in Double Arrest

NEWTON, NJ— Two Newton men are facing drug charges after a routine traffic stop.  On Thursday, September 7 Newton Sgt. Michael Monaco pulled over Daniel Bierman for a loud muffler, police report.

The back seat passenger John Nystrand, 36, was found to be a suspect in an ongoing investigation of a stolen purse from a home on Halsted Street. The purse contained cash and personal items. Nystrand also lives on Halsted Street, according to police..

When Nystrand got out of the car bag that used to contain heroin was found at his feet.  Nystrand admitted to police that it was his.  Police also found a hypodermic needle, police report.

Nystrand was taken into custody, arrested, and charged with the following offenses according to Newton Police: possession of a hypodermic syringe and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The driver of the 2004 Chrysler Pacifica Biermann, 29 of Spring Street, was found to have a suspended driver’s license.  When police searched his car they found a fabric bag containing several hypodermic needles, numerous empty bags and three full bags containing heroin, Biermann admitted the items belonged to him, police report.

Both men were taken into custody and charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of hypodermic syringe, possession of drug paraphernalia.  Bierman was also charged with operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, possession of controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle and loud muffler.

Both Nystrand and Biermann were processed and released after being charged on complaint summonses, according to police. The matter is pending a September 27 appearance in Superior Court.

Officers involved were Sgt. Michael Monaco, Ptl. John Flanagan, Ptl. Kenneth Teets, and Ptl. Jared Zappa.
