Bicyclist Struck and Killed in Maplewood Saturday


MAPLEWOOD, NJ — A bicyclist who was struck by a motor vehicle early Saturday morning died as a result of his injuries, according to a press release from the Maplewood Police Department.

The man was biking in the area of 1600 Springfield Ave. when he was struck by a motor vehicle traveling east on Springfield Avenue at about 2:30 a.m., according to police, who arrived with EMS at the scene minutes after the accident occurred and attempted to render first aid. 

"Unfortunately the victim succumbed to their injuries at the scene," stated Maplewood Police Chief Jim DeVaul in the press release about the incident.

The cyclist has been identified as Jeffrey Scott, Jr., age 29, of Vauxhall, according to a press release from the Essex County Prosecutor's office. Scott was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:48 a.m., according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly of the Prosecutor's Homicide Unit

The driver of the motor vehicle remained on the scene, according to Fennelly.

The vehicle involved was impounded for further examination by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, and an autopsy will be completed by the Regional Medical Examiners Office, according to police.

The incident is currently under investigation by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which is standard procedure in serious or fatal accidents, stated police.

No charges have been filed at this time and the investigation is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call the Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit at 877-847-7432.
