WESTFIELD, NJ — Boxwood Coffee is officially open in Downtown Westfield.
The coffee shop and café, at 143 East Broad St. where Panera was, hosted a friends and family event on Wednesday evening to celebrate what owner Stephen Bellamy is calling a “slow open.”
“We are planning to phase in items like our made-to-order menu and we are looking forward to our mocktail bar, which is not ready because we are still waiting on some hardware,” he said.
Bellamy says that he feels both excitement and immense relief now that the establishment is finally ready to welcome guests.
“It was a much bigger project than we initially anticipated,” he said. The café was originally slated to open at the end of 2017 and, while nothing specific stalled the renovation, Bellamy said it took longer than they had hoped.
Boxwood Coffee also has a Summit location, but Bellamy says that the Westfield location will be more than just coffee.
“We’re going to do things that no one’s ever done before,” Bellamy said back in September, while plans were being set for the new location.
According to Bellamy, the Westfield location is three time the size of its Summit counterpart and it will offer additional experiences within the store, including homemade juice and mocktails, brewing classes, tasting events and even a training lab that will offer certifications from the Specialty Coffee Association of America.
