SOMERVILLE, NJ – Hundreds of vintage, customized and classic car owners have been looking forward to Friday night for several months, waiting to show off their prized American iron.

Their highly-prized automobiles are reflective of a time when seat belts were optional, distracted driving meant no fuzzy dice hanging off the mirrors and topping off the gas tank only took a pocketful of loose change.

Assuming the weather holds out – most owners avoid wet weather – the 28th annual summer season of  Cruise Nights comes to Main Street in downtown Somerville beginning Friday, May 26, and will continue weekly on Fridays through Labor Day weekend.

Hundreds of cars line both sides of Main Street, extending to the nose-first parking on East Main Street in front of the historic county Courthouse.

There’s a new twist to this year’s inaugural car show.

Gallery on Main, an antiques, restoration shop and art gallery, will host a display of tricked-out tricycles and bicycles on the sidewalk outside the store at 30 W. Main St.

In the spirit of art, restoration and customization, and in recognition of the long-running car show and Monday’s Tour of Somerville bicycle races, gallery owners Shaun Daley and Michelle Mundt decided the time was long overdue for these pedal pushers to put their pride and joy on display.

The bike display is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. and will wrap up when the car owners begin to motor out of town around 9 p.m.

There is no registration or sign-up for the bike show.
