Congregation Ohr Shalom Partners with Moms Helping Moms Foundation to Collect Family Necessities

SUMMIT, NJ - Congregation Ohr Shalom – Summit Jewish Community Center (COS - SJCC) is partnering with local non-profit Moms Helping Moms Foundation, which focuses on families struggle to provide babies with clean, dry diapers, to help young families in New Jersey afford basic necessities.

Hannah Caminiti, a young COS - SJCC member, worked at the Foundation as an intern during her last month of her senior year at New Providence High School, and introduced COS - SJCC to the organization. Moms Helping Moms was founded by New Providence's Bridget Cutler as  “as a simple idea by a group of new mothers who shared the common ideal that no baby should ever have to go without life’s basic necessities." The Foundation began to collect donations of essential baby items from families who no longer needed them and pass them on to families who did. This simple idea has blossomed into an organization that makes a huge impact.

Caminiti's internship had a profound impact on her personally. “This experience made me realize how fortunate I am to have parents that can provide for my family. Because of this, I want to help those who are struggling just for basic needs and make others aware of their circumstances through street fairs and diaper drives.” She is headed to Penn State University College of Nursing in the fall.

According to Moms Helping Moms, babies need 6-10 diapers per day, and on average, diapers cost $18 a week and about $936 a year. Medicaid covers of one third of all births in the U.S. each year, yet government programs do not provide diapers as a basic need for babies. This leaves families in distress and sets up babies for health complications.

On behalf of the Foundation, Congregation Ohr Shalom will be collecting the following:

  • Unopened packs Wipes
  • Sealed Formula and baby food (Please check expiration dates)
