Construction Update on Vauxhall Ave. Bridge, Chestnut St. Bridge and Morris Avenue Work


UNION, NJ – A CodeRed alert about road construction, the resulting congestion, and what can be expected, was sent to residents Tuesday morning.

The message said the work on these state roads is being performed by the New Jersey Department of Transportation.  The message outlined the following work scheduled for June and July:

  • The Vauxhall Bridge over Route 22.  Work is being done at night and will be ongoing for at least 4-6 weeks depending on conditions.
  • Work will continue on the Chestnut Bridge during the day and will take another 3-4 weeks.
  • Work on Route 82/Morris Avenue, from Lehigh Ave. to North Ave., will begin Tuesday evening. It is anticipated that work will proceed with middle lanes first and then expanding to the outer lanes.

We are aware that work on State roads and Bridges is happening around town causing congestion at various points throughout the day. Here’s a quick update on what you can expect as we close out June and move into July. 

• The Vauxhall Bridge over Route 22 is being worked on to alleviate issues similar to those occurring at the Chestnut St. bridge. Work is being done at night due to the traffic on Route 22. It will be ongoing for some time, at least 4-6 weeks depending on the conditions they encounter as they work.

• Work will continue on the Chestnut Bridge only during the day and will take another 3-4 weeks.

• Work on Route 82/Morris Ave from Lehigh Ave to North Ave will begin this evening. Work will most likely proceed similar to how the west side went- performing middle lanes first and then expanding to the outer lanes.
