WESTFIELD, NJ — UPDATED AT 12:15 p.m.
Around 7 a.m. Sunday morning, a stolen car left the roadway and crashed on the 1200 block of Central Avenue, according to Westfield Police Chief David Wayman. Four males excited the vehicle and fled on foot, he said.
Photos taken by the home's owner show that the car crashed through a fence and into the bushes.
The car was not being pursued by police at the time, Wayman said.
“Police arrived and the vehicle ended up being stolen out of Manalapan,” Wayman said. “Subsequently, three males from Newark have been apprehended.”
Moments later he said that the fourth suspect had been caught.
“We heard a loud bang at 7 o’clock, looked out the window and saw the car in our front yard,” homeowner Aileen Sherman said. “Saw two men — one took off right away, the other was stopped by a passerby to see if he was ok. He then tried to take the passerby’s car. When that didn't work out, he took off.”
Sherman said that police were quick to help.
“An officer stayed with us until the car was towed at 11 o’clock,” she said. “Thankfully no one was hurt. Only damage was to our fence, lawn and shrubs.”
Police are conducting an investigation, Wayman said.
