SPRINGFIELD, NJ - Dayton boys varsity soccer team's season starts next week.  Coach Felix Fabiano said the season, “…will be a reloading year” with many new players filling the positions vacated by last year’s graduating seniors.

That is about eight positions since eight of last year’s starters were seniors on a team that had 13 seniors.   This year’s team had a total of 65 students come out for it including a group of freshman totaling 24, or over a third of the entire group and enough to fill a freshman team.

Among the returning players are All-Union County First Team and All-Valley Division member, Anthony Nagy; All-Union County Second Team and All-Valley Division member, Bryce Forys.  They are the team captains.

Coach Fabiano and the other coaches have not finalized the roster for the varsity and junior varsity teams.  That will be done after another scrimmage and more practices.   At practices, the focus is on conditioning and game preparation and strategy.

Last year, Dayton won 16 games, lost eight and tied one.  The season was their 17th consecutive winning season.  Their last losing season was in 1999.   Coach Fabiano has been the coach for the entire streak.  He started coaching Dayton boys soccer in 1996.

At the end the 2016 season, Dayton was seeded number two in the North 2 Group 1 Sectional Tournament, which they won.  The Bulldogs lost 1-0 in the semifinals of the state tournament to Verona at Indian Lakes High School.

Dayton performed well in their Monday scrimmage against Delaware Valley High School.  Their two remaining scrimmages are Wednesday August 30 vs. Elizabeth High School and Friday September 1 vs. Millburn High School.  Both games are home games and they start at 10:00 a.m.

The Bulldogs’ 2017 regular-season schedule follows:

September: 9/5 at Edison Academy (season opener/away); 9/7 vs. Oratory Catholic Prep (home opener); 9/9 at Union Catholic Regional HS; 9/12 at New Providence HS; 9/14 vs. Roselle Catholic; 9/16 vs. Bogota HS @ 10 a.m.; 9/23 vs. David Brearley HS @ 10 a.m.; 9/28 at Rahway HS.

October: 10/3 at Oratory Catholic HS; 10/5 vs. New Providence HS; 10/10 at Linden HS; 10/12 vs. Hillside HS; 10/13 vs. Governor Livingston HS; 10/17 vs. Roselle Park HS; 10/19 at Abraham Clark HS; 10/24 at David Brearley HS @ 6 p.m.; 10/26 vs. Rahway HS.
