Dayton Softball Honors Their Tri-Captains with a 12-5 Win over Union

SPRINGFIELD, NJ – The Jonathan Dayton Bulldogs had a power surge Friday and beat the Union High School Farmers 12-5 on the day they honored their senior Captains - Arianna DeMartino, Karly Fitzpatrick and Marinna Kwinta. The Bulldogs are 9-8 for the season.

The Farmers jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the top of the second inning only to have the Bulldogs over take them with five runs in the bottom of the second inning and then add six runs in the bottom of the third inning. 

The Farmers managed eight hits and five runs off of Dayton’s pitcher Holly Wilson.  Only two of the runs were earned.  Wilson struck out nine while throwing 130 pitches, of which 87 were strikes.  She walked six batters.

Dayton’s 12 runs came from 18 hits during 36 at bats.  Every player got at least one hit.

Shortstop Amanda Lau was a perfect four for four at the plate.  That included a home run and a double, three RBIs and allowed her to score two runs.  Lead-off hitter Maggie Phillips was three of five and scored two runs.  Sophia Ritter had one of her best days at the plate going two of four, scoring two runs and getting three RBIs.

The captains all contributed.  Kwinta was one of three, scored two runs, had one RBI, got a walk and was hit by a pitch.  Fitzpatrick was also one of two, scored a run, had an RBI and was walked twice.  DeMartino was three of four and scored two runs.

Right fielder Victoria Delia was two of five at the plate.  Left fielder Angelina Cacioppo was one of five with an RBI.  Pitcher Wilson helped her cause going driving in three runs.

Dayton plays at Bound Brook Monday, at West Orange Wednesday, and at Bloomfield Thursday. 

The Captains

All three players are four year members of the varsity softball team and strong fielders.

Arianna DeMartino started at second base in 2017, but took on the pitching duties early in the season.  She walked four batters in 2017 and pitched 90.2 innings at Dayton allowing 46 runs.  At the plate, she has had 67 hits in 209 at bats, for a career batting average of .321.  She has scored 53 runs and had 33 RBIs.  Her on base average is .408.

Karly Fitzpatrick is the catcher.  She has 67 hits in 234 at bats for a .286 batting average.  She also walked 39 times putting her on base percentage at .410.  She is also one of the top 20 students in the class of 2017.

Center fielder Marinna Kwinta is only the second Dayton softball player to get 100 career hits.  She had 108 hits in 263 at bats for a career average of .411 and an on base percentage of at least .471.
