Girls Basketball: Lau, Brandstatter and Tough Team Defense Lead Dayton Past Hoboken, 56-30

HOBOKEN, NJ – In one of the final games before tournament time, the Jonathan Dayton Bulldogs visited the Hoboken Red Wings in a game that paired two of the top six seeded teams in the NJSIAA North 2 Group 1 Sectional tournament.  The Bulldogs earned the second seed and the Red Wings are the sixth seed.

Dayton outplayed Hoboken with its defense putting the brakes on Hoboken’s offense after the first quarter/  The Bulldogs earned a 56-30 win.

The first quarter was the highest scoring with Dayton pulling ahead 19-12.  In the second quarter, Dayton limited Hoboken to four points and scored 12 giving the Bulldogs a 31-16 lead at the end of the half.  Dayton outscored Hoboken 12-7 in the third quarter and 13-7 in the fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs’ scoring was led by senior captain Amanda Lau and junior Sayre Brandstatter.  Lau scored 19 points and Brandstatter scored 17 points.  Lau hit four three-point shots and Brandstatter hit two.  What else they did on the court was perhaps more impressive.  They each made four assists.  Lau pulled down six rebounds and made eight steals, while Brandstatter pulled down five rebounds and made five steals.

The other senior captain Nicolette Angelo made her presence felt under the basket. She pulled down a team high eight rebounds and blocked two shots.  Angelo also scored six points, had a steal and made two assists.

Senior Melanie Schickler added eight points, pulled down a rebound and had two assist.  Senior Zoe Frei scored three points and had five rebounds.

Junior Caitlynn McTernan had five rebounds, one assist and three steals.  Senior Gabriella Petruzzella scored three points and had an assist. 

Junior Maggie Phillips pulled down two rebounds, had a steal and an assist.  Junior Julia Cohen pulled down a rebound and had two steals. Sophomore Michelle Bellino had  a rebound.  Sophomore Haeley Santos also played.

For the game, the Bulldogs hit 14 field goals, eight three-point shots and four free throws.  They also pulled down 34 rebounds, had 15 assists, made 20 steals and blocked two shots.

Hoboken was led by Aiyana Peoples with eight points, and Zoe Mattissich and Brianna Campbell each with seven points.

The win brings Dayton’s season record to 17-2.  Their next game is the first round game in the Union County Tournament.  The eighth seeded Bulldogs face the ninth seeded Summit Hilltoppers 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at home. is Springfield’s free daily news source.
