When The Homes for Horses Coalition (HHC) was founded in 2007, it was with a vision of ending horse slaughter and other forms of equine abuse, while promoting growth, collaboration, and professionalism in the equine rescue and protection community.

Just as the national sponsors, Animal Welfare Institute, the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) and The Humane Society of the United States intended, the coalition has become an inclusive group of rescues, sanctuaries, safety-net programs, and advocates who provide care and homes to horses in need, advance best practices, fight for lifesaving legislation, and promote responsible horse ownership. Now, with more than 420 member organizations, The Homes for Horses Coalition is in a unique position to advocate for equines from a highly informed perspective.

“Personal support and like-minded connections is an integral part of HHC membership,” said Cindy Gendron, Manager of the Coalition. “The business of saving horses is hard, both physically and emotionally, and the support we can offer each other is priceless.”

“Throughout its 10 years The Homes for Horses Coalition has served as the nation’s premier voice of equine rescue,” said Nancy Blaney, Director, Government Affairs, Animal Welfare Institute. “In that time, the coalition has served the equine rescue community by providing invaluable resources such as education, emergency planning, support, and expertise.”

“The Homes for Horses Coalition is actively engaged in improving the welfare of our nation’s equines, and the life-saving impact its work is having is a testament to what can be achieved through collaboration,” said Nancy Perry, Senior Vice President of ASPCA Government Relations. “The Coalition is a unifying organization, bringing together the expertise of equine welfare professionals and advocates in an effort to share knowledge and provide access to critical resources to protect horses from suffering and abuse.”

“The Homes for Horses Coalition was envisioned by its founders as a forum, support network and resource for those opposed to the tragedy of horse slaughter and working to provide humane rehoming alternatives.  It’s gratifying to see that this, the first and only nationwide coalition of equine rescues, sanctuaries and protection groups, continues to meet the needs of so many member organizations,” said Cheryl Jacobson, Deputy Director, Equine Protection, The Humane Society of the United States.

Through its annual conference, webinars and weekly messages, The HHC offers information and training at little or no cost to equine rescues and advocates.  From fundraising to emergency planning, from documenting cruelty cases to improving adoptions, the HHC promotes sound financial and management practices and provides resources and education pertinent to the equine rescue and protection community.
