TOMS RIVER, NJ - The Group 1 State Relay Championships took place Saturday in Toms River.  The meet was against all of the Group 1 programs in New Jersey.

The Bulldogs battled some illness last week and a couple minor aches and pains.  As a result, some people were either limited to one event, or did not compete.  This was done as a precaution as the team prepares for the individual championship part of the season.

Coach Matt VanDeursen said, “Overall, the team competed very well.”

The girls 4x800 meter relay of freshman Abbey Hochreiner, Juniors Erica Carrie and Carina Servello, and Senior Jess Micolta finished tenth with a time of 11 minutes and eight seconds.

Coach VanDeursen added, “To my knowledge, that is the fastest time by an indoor or outdoor girls relay team since possibly the 1980's.” He continued, “The fastest leg was run by freshman Abbey Hochreiner who ran first and put the team in a great spot in the race.”

The boys Sprint Medley Relay “…also competed very well.”  The team also finished in tenth place.  The boys relay team is Sophomores Jovanni Salcfas, 400 meters; James Mooney, 200 meters; Junior Sean Riley, 200 meters; and Senior Fabian Mestanza, 800 meters.  They ran a time of 3:57.  According to Coach VanDeursen, “This time is also the fastest of at least the last 20 years by a Dayton indoor track team.”

Looking ahead, Coach finished by saying, “Both the boys and girls have a great core of underclassmen.  They're extremely hard working and they enjoy the sport and each other.  With only one boy senior and three girl seniors, we should look to do very well at this meet in the future.”

Dear Editor:

I read with interest in a local newspaper regarding the Union county democrat party political infighting for their “county chair” selection. There were 2 letters juxtaposed, each one listing supporters of either Senator Scutari or Fanwood Mayor Mahr, who are the two main people vying for the “boss” position.
