KENILWORTH, NJ – Following the death of Mason Stein last December, members of the Kenilworth community have come together to fundraise for a memorial in his memory.

Stein, a young student at Harding Elementary School, loved baseball and firetrucks, according to multiple sources. In his honor, the community hopes to install a memorial in the playground at Di Mario Park.

“We wanted to do something nice for the family,” Kenilworth Mayor Anthony DeLuca said. “Kenilworth looks after its own.”

Stein’s baseball team was sponsored by the Kenilworth Diner. After his passing, the four owners of the restaurant teamed up with the Kenilworth Rec Department to fundraise for the memorial.

“The rec came to me and asked if we could help,” Toni Benas, one of the restaurant’s owners, said. “So we decided to create a burger in his name. A portion of the proceeds will go to the foundation.”

The “Mason Burger,” a bacon cheeseburger with waffle fries, will be sold at the diner through September in his honor. The meal was his favorite, according to DeLuca.

“Mason was a great kid with a wonderful smile,” DeLuca said. “It broke the town’s heart. When something like that happens, it makes you want to do whatever you can for the family.”

To donate to Stein’s Memorial Fund, go to the Kenilworth Diner and order a “Mason Burger Special.” Photos of the burgers can be seen on social media with the hashtag #masonburger2017.

“The Stein’s are a real good family,” Benas said. “Come out and enjoy a bacon cheeseburger. It’s for a good cause and it’s something to pull the town together.”
