Major Five-Alarm Early-Morning Summit Ave. Apartment Fire Displaces Multiple Families, Sends Two Individuals to Hospital

SUMMIT, NJ - A major residential structure fire at 125 Summit Avenue has caused significant damage to the apartment building, displaced approximately a dozen families, and sent two individuals to Overlook Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. There are no reported injuries to first responders.

The Summit Fire Department received the Alarm Call today at 5:13 a.m. and, upon their arrival, firefighters found heavy fire conditions throughout the building. Multiple rescues of residents were executed by Summit firefighters through windows.

The blaze was eventually declared under control just over two hours later at 7:14 a.m.

The Summit Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Summit Police Department and the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad. Assistance for the five-alarm fire was provided by Union County Mutual Aid with Millburn, Springfield, Mountainside, Union, Fanwood, New Providence, Kenilworth, Scotch Plains, Berkeley Heights and Roselle Park Fire Departments responding.

Approximately 12 families were evacuated from 125 Summit Avenue and two nearby buildings. The management of The Committed Pig restaurant opened the venue to provide temporary shelter for evacuees. The City of Summit is working with Red Cross to secure shelter for the displaced families.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Summit Fire Department Investigation Unit.
