MAPLEWOOD, NJ — The Maplewood Police have issued additional details related to the incident that occurred this past Friday morning at the Avalon Bay at 200 Boyden Avenue that includes an Elizabeth teen. 

The two men, who are in police custody, forced entry into the apartment by utilizing a crowbar to pry open the back door. According to authorities, this helped to make it very clear that this was a targeting incident.

They two people have been identified as Dequan Lewis, 24 years old from Vauxhall, and Isaiah Gavin, 18 years old from Elizabeth,

Police have charged both with Burglary, Robbery, Receiving Stolen property, Possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Criminal Mischief, and Conspiracy to Commit Robbery.

Authorities said, the handgun recovered in the vicinity of the crime was a 9mm Beretta that had been stolen out of Newport News, Virginia.

Police are working with both the management and residents of Avalon Bay to ensure their safety and to address their concerns. As there are many questions still to be answered this remains an active investigation, Detectives continue to canvass the area for witnesses and video footage to enable them to establish a timeline of the events.
