Mark Your Calendar for the 23rd Annual Hoops to End Homelessness January 28

ELIZABETH, NJ – Shake off the winter doldrums to aid a good cause Jan. 28 at the 23rd Annual Hoops to End Homelessness Basketball Classic to benefit the Elizabeth Coalition to House the Homeless.

Get ready to hoop it up with Tameka Dixon, former WNBA player from Westfield, who will tip off the girls’ game. Dixon was selected in the first round of the 1997 WNBA draft by the Los Angeles Sparks. After nine years in L.A., she played for Houston Comets and the Indiana Fever. She has played on the same pro team as basketball legends Lisa Leslie, Daedra Charles and Penny Toler.

The tournament begins at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 28, at Dunn Sports Center, 600 S. Pearl Street, Elizabeth. This event raises funds for the Coalition’s Operation Warm Heart Program, which is a winter shelter program for homeless and near homeless families.

Here’s the schedule:

2:00 p.m.: Elizabeth Police Department vs. Union County Sheriff’s Officers

3:30 p.m.: Elizabeth High School Girls vs. Hillside High School Girls

5:00 p.m.: St. Mary’s High School vs. Newark Central High School

6:45 p.m.: Elizabeth High School vs. Plainfield High School

Each year, the event attracts hundreds of spectators from across the State of New Jersey. The event supported through sponsorships and donations, such as from the Union County Sheriff’s Office, Trinitas Regional Medical Center, Infineum, Garden State Community Bank, Laundry Warehouse and Wakefern Food Corporation. Food and refreshments will be sold during all games.
