Millburn Free Public Library Credits: Liz Miller Boose

MILLBURN, NJ - The Millburn Library announced its first Fall Lecture Series starting Monday, September 11, at 2pm in the auditorium. This new lecture series is designed to encourage lifetime learning with lectures on the humanities, health and wellness, historical events, and much more.

September 11Brooklyn Dodgers with Bud Livingston, retired teacher and author.

Come join us to hear about one of baseball’s most famous and most frustrating teams ever. In the late 1930s they slowly went from a downtrodden loser to win the pennant in 1941 and then to proceed to their annual defeat in the World Series at the hands of the Yankees, something that would last for 14 years.

September 18Food and Mood with Deanna Schweighardt, Registered Dietitian from Saint Barnabas Medical Center.

We will be discussing how changing what you put on your plate can change your mood, outlook, and emotional health.

September 25Rosie the Riveter Unmasked with Dr. James Kimble from the Seton Hall University College of Communications and the Arts.

A great deal of widely accepted knowledge about World War II’s Rosie the Riveter is actually based on exaggerated or misunderstood legends.  Drawing on a number of recent research projects, Dr. Kimble explores the numerous myths that have developed around the famous “We Can Do It!” poster, and relates his quest to find the elusive woman behind the timeless image.

October 9Outsmart the Scammers with Ozzie Niazi, a financial advisor with Edward Jones.

Incidents of fraud are on the rise and scammers’ tactics are becoming more complex. This presentation will help provide you the information you need to Outsmart the Scammers. We’ll discuss how to spot certain red flags that may indicate a fraudulent encounter, resources you can turn to in the event you or loved one is targeted, and steps you can take now to help protect yourself and your loved ones.

October 16The Reality and Illusion of Jane Austen’s England with Karen Gevirtz from Seton Hall University’s Department of English.

Henry Nobley/Fitzwilliam Darcy tells Jane Hayes/Elizabeth Bennet in the film Austenland (2013) that history is a “simpler world where love is straightforward and lasting.” That’s certainly the world of Jane Austen’s characters as we know it from popular media. This talk uncovers some of the rich, neglected aspects of Austen’s world, and explores what’s lost and gained when we use Austen and her novels to make the past into “Austenland.”

October 23Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven with David Emma, retired Union High School English teacher.

Mr. Emma will recite Edgar Allan Poe's most famous poem, "The Raven," from memory, followed by a discussion of the theme, structure, and various poetic elements of the poem. A major source of information will be NYU English Professor Kenneth Silverman's excellent Poe biography entitled Edgar A. Poe: Mournful and Never-ending Remembrance. The presentation will conclude with, believe it or not, something to leave the audience laughing!

All lectures will be at 2pm in the Millburn Library auditorium. Registration is recommended but not required. These programs are free to all and are generously sponsored by the Friends of the Millburn Library. The Millburn Library is located at 200 Glen Ave., Millburn, NJ 07041 and can be reached at 973-376-1006.
