The New Providence Reds are set to open their 2017 campaign this Sunday. After a dramatic playoff run that saw the team win their 3rd championship in four years last summer, the team looks to add to the trophy case winning back-to-back championships for the 2nd time in the New Jersey Amateur Baseball League’s (NJABL) five year history.

The Reds will open up against the Jersey Rays for a 1pm start at Metro Field in Jersey City. The Rays finished the 2016 season with a regular season record of 10-8 and 0-2 in the playoffs, while the Reds were 12-6 in the regular season and 5-0 in the playoffs.

The Reds will see local players Nick Sommo, Matt Nesto, Tom Pavero, Ray Nesto and Joe Randazzo all return for the 2017 season as will back-to-back league Cy Young award winner Scott Horowitz who finished last season with a record of 6-2 and a 1.99 ERA.

Some new faces will also don a Reds uniform for the first time as catcher Joe Lenz of Summit  joins the team as does pitcher Ryan Sullivan who spent the previous three seasons with the Livingston A’s who were league champions in 2015. During Sullivan’s 2015 campaign he finished with a 4-1 record, a 1.54 ERA and struck out 65 batters in 41 innings pitched.

The Reds will once again be managed by Matt Sommo and Sal Nesto, both of New Providence and both former coaches on the college level. Also returning to the team as sponsors are Orangetheory Fitness and Sport Clips, both in the Village Shopping Center in New Providence.

Joining the sponsorship team in 2017 is Taylor Rental who are in their 47th year of helping those with their party and tool rental needs. Taylor Rental is located at 284 Springfield Ave in Berkeley Heights.
