UNION, NJ – New Jersey Transit reports the Raritan Valley Line trains will resume regular weekday service between Cranford and Newark and High Bridge and Raritan on Monday.  Train service was suspended over the weekend after the freight train derailment in Union on Friday afternoon.

According to their website, NJ Transit says customers may experience possible 15-minute delays in both directions due to ongoing repairs.

As a result of the repairs, the 8:32 a.m. (Train 5902) departure from Plainfield will not operate on Monday.  Customers may instead use the 9:05 a.m. (Train 5126) departure from Plainfield.

The cleanup of the derailed freight cars continued over the weekend in Union.  On Friday, a CSX freight train derailed at about 2:15 p.m.  The train, with 141 cars, was empty of cargo.  The Union County Bureau of Hazardous Materials team cleared the area by about 5:00 p.m. on Friday.

Area residents and businesses were evacuated for several hours as a precaution.  Only the conductor and engineer were on the freight train at the time of the derailment.  Neither were injured.
