UNION, NJ – The man found deceased in a burning vehicle last week has been identified as Union resident Walter Foster, according to the Union County Prosecutor’s Office.

The Prosecutor’s Office said the cause and manner of Foster’s death, as well as the source of the fire, remain under active investigation by the Union County Homicide Task Force, the Union Police Department, the Union County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Unit and the Union County Arson Task Force.

Union firefighters were called to the scene of a car fire at the Ideal Professional Building complex at the corner of Morris Avenue and Lousons Road at just after 3:30 a.m. Friday.   Upon extinguishing the fire, firefighters discovered a body inside the vehicle.

According to a Gofundme page set up by his nephew Thomas Chadwick, Foster, 54, leaves behind his wife Tracy and four children, Chad, Ashley, Summer and Zoe.

“Walter, affectionately known as Wally, was well liked and loved by all who encountered him,” read the Gofundme page.  “He was a dedicated volunteer basketball coach for over 35 years at his Catholic grammar school.”

According to the Gofundme account, the page was set up for “contributions from those who desire to honor Walter's memory and lighten the burden of his family during this enormously difficult and challenging time.”  The fundraising goal is $25,000.  As of this publication, just over $13,000 has been donated.

The Gofundme page is at:  https://www.gofundme.com/walterfoster

Anyone with information about this matter is still urged to contact Homicide Task Force Detective Brendan Sullivan at 908-966-0999.
