SPRINGFIELD, NJ – In March, the Springfield Free Public Library held the world premier of a Springfield produced documentary about a Springfield resident's passion - beekeeping.  On Wednesday, Springfield residents will get a section chance to watch "The Modest Beekeeper" and meet the film's producer Amefika Gray.  The event is sponsored by the Springfield Free Public Library and the Springfield Girl Scouts.  Music will be provided by the Springfield pop-rock band “The Vaughns,” Bloomfield musicians Raheen & Tracey Henry as well as by filmmaker Gray.  It will be shown in the library at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The documentary happened because two Springfield residents got to know each other became friends and found that one had a story to tell and the other could help tell the story.  P.J. Martin works for Springfield’s DPW.  He is also a beekeeper.  It is a hobby for him and it is also a passion.  Amefika Gray has a media business called Renewed Media LLC.  As the website says, “Renewed Media specializes in creating original video content” and this documentary is part of a new series called “Springfield Stories”.

Together they created a 30 minute documentary called “The Modest Beekeeper”.  It will be shown tomorrow at the Springfield Free Public Library.  Martin and Gray will be there and Martin will participate in a question and answer session afterwards.

During the filming of the documentary, Gray learned “…how important bees are to our way of life and the balance of nature.”  One other important lesson was “The different paths people can take and how important is to appreciate the uniqueness of an individual and their purpose.”

Martin is a beekeeper who also teaches others how to be beekeepers.  Alyson Miller, Chair of Springfield’s Environmental Commission is one of his students.

The documentary focuses on the process of harvesting honey over the course of three days from the hives of P.J. Martin.  The filming process started last spring and final editing occurred in March.

Aside from his media business, Gray is a Pastor at the Living Water Church in N. Arlington NJ and an evening volunteer at the Chisholm Center working with teenagers.  He is married and has three children in the Springfield Public School System.  Amefika is Swahili and means “He has arrived”.
