SPRINGFIELD, NJ – The Jonathan Dayton Bulldogs faced a pitcher who was  at the top of her game Wednesday and the result was a tough 1-0 loss to seven seeded David Brearley High School in a semifinal game of the NJSIAA North 2, Group 1 Tournament.

There was no score after six innings.  To that point, Dayton had the best scoring chance when two runners were left on second and third.  Brearley started the seventh inning with an out and then got three hits that just seemed to find the right spots on the field.  A single drove in the winning run with bases loaded and one out, but Arianna DeMartino’s pitching and strong fielding kept it there.

Brearley’s pitcher junior Michele Capizzano seemed to be at the top of her game.  She gave up just four hits, walked only one batter and struck out 13.  One reason was she was her ability to change speeds off a good fast pitch.  Coming into the game, she pitched 119 innings and allowed 39 earned runs.  Her last three games were shutouts and included a no-hitter against Bloomfield Tech, a one hitter against North Arlington, and this one.

Dayton’s pitcher senior Arianna DeMartino gave up just one run on eight hits.   She pitched 94 innings for the Bulldogs in 2017 and gave up 40 runs.  She only walked seven.

Dayton ends the season at 13-10 and loses three players to graduation.  All are team captains.  They are pitcher and second baseman Arianna DeMartino, catcher Karly Fitzpatrick and centerfielder Marinna Kwinta.

Brearley is 13-6 and faces the winner of tomorrow’s game matching the one seed Ridgefield against the five seed Roselle Park on May 30.
