SOMERVILLE, NJ – The Immaculate Conception School hosted a “Blue Mass” Friday morning at Immaculate Conception R.C. Church to honor the men and women of law enforcement.

The mass was attended by all students and staff in the K-8th grade school, with more than 100 members of law enforcement, including Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson.

The annual mass was also a tribute to the memory of Summit Police Det. Matthew Tarentino, a Somerville resident, who was killed in a traffic accident on Route 78 almost one year ago.

Tarentino had been a longtime parishioner, beginning as an altar boy. He had also attended the grammar school and Immaculata High School.

Several thousand police officers from across New Jersey and out-of-state came to the church and paid their respects to Tarentino at a funeral mass June 3 last year.

Dozens of uniformed police officers, from patrolmen to police chiefs participated in Friday's mass, as well as plains clothes detectives with.more than one dozen law enforcement agencies were represented from Somerset and Middlesex counties, the New Jersey State Police, The Somerset County Sheriff’s Office and the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office.

The police sat in the first several rows of pews in front of the altar, with the school band and choir performing several songs during the ceremony.
