WESTFIELD, NJ — The Dayton boys basketball team saw its Union County Tournament stay short-lived on Saturday.
Senior Griffin Rooney scored a game-high 21 points with two 3-pointers and six rebounds and senior Jake Walsh added 11 with three 3-pointers and three steals to propel fifth-seeded Westfield past 20th-seeded Dayton in the preliminary round of the 84th Union County Tournament in Westfield, 60-42.
Westfield (15-5), winners of two straight and four of its last five games, advanced to Wednesday’s first round and will host 12th-seeded Scotch Plains/Fanwood at 7:00 p.m.
Leading 24-17 at halftime, the Blue Devils used an 18-7 third quarter to take control.
Junior Jack Spellman posted a double-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks in the win.
Senior guard DJ Alicea once again led the way for the Bulldogs (9-10) with 17 points and sophomore Cameron Campbell-Miller had another strong showing with 12 points. Junior Josh Jackson posted eight points, while AC Corigliano chipped in with four in the loss.
Alicea, who has 349 points on the season, has scored in double figures in 66 straight games played and his school-leading career total now sits at 1,424 points.
Next up on the Bulldogs will be Friday night’s Senior Night home game versus Delaware Valley with first tip set for 7:00 p.m.
State Tournament Seeding announced: The ninth-seeded Bulldogs will visit 8th-seeded American History in Newark in the first round of the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 2, Group 1 Sectional Tournament on Monday, March 2.
The winner advances to Wednesday’s quarterfinal round on March 4 and will play the winner between 16th-seeded People’s Prep and top-seeded Dunellen.
