SPRINGFIELD, NJ- Junior guard Antonio Salcfas scored 20 points and senior guard Nick Ulizio added 13 to power 20th-seeded Dayton to a 68-50 victory over 21st-seeded Koinonia in the first round of the Union County Tournament in Springfield.

With a weekend to rest and a bit of momentum to build on, the Bulldogs will visit fifth-seeded Union Catholic (11-9) in the first round of the UCT on Monday, with first tip-off set for 7 p.m.

Union Catholic, which has won four of its last six games, upended Nottingham, 79-76, in overtime Friday in the Metro Classic at Kean University in Union.

Senior guard Matt Kanengiser added nine points and senior Joe Kastner added seven for Dayton (8-10), which snapped a three-game losing streak and won for only the second time in its last six games.

The Bulldogs, which have trailed after the first quarter in five straight games entering Friday’s contest, finally exploded from the outset with a 14-2 first quarter and posted 19 more points in the second quarter to take control and a commanding 33-13 halftime lead.

Sophomore center/forward Jim Clemente scored a team-high 19 points with two 3-pointers and sophomore guard Ben Paregrin added nine, all on 3-pointers, for Koinonia (5-12), which has dropped seven of its last nine games.

After Monday’s clash with Union Catholic, Dayton visits rival Brearley in Kenilworth on Valentine’s Day Tuesday with first tip set for 4 p.m. and then travels up Route 22 to take on North Plainfield in a Friday night tilt at 7 p.m.
