SPRINGFIELD, NJ – After the first day of the conference championships, the Jonathan Dayton Bulldogs boys track team is in second place.  Day two concludes Monday at Governor Livingston.

Coach Matt VanDuersen summed up the performance of the Jonathan Dayton boys track team after day one of the Conference Championships, “We had a pretty good day.”  He continued and said, “The kids always approach this meet with intensity and focus.  A lot of kids are hitting their personal bests and are putting in a great effort.”

After this meet, the coach said, “We have our sectional championships coming up in the next couple weeks, so our lineup is starting to become all set.  The kids all are performing right where they should be at this point in the season.”

Here are some of the performances that stood out:

  • Freshman Jovanni Salcfas finished fifth place in the 400 hurdles with a 1 minute 1.33 seconds
  • Senior Justin Ehly finished in second place in the Long Jump and Triple Jump, and third in the 400 hurdles
  • Junior Fabian Mestanza ran a seven second personal best in the mile in 4:52 to finish fourth
  • Freshmen Patrick Machado and CJ Stavick finished fourth and fifth respectively in the long jump with jumps of 18 feet 11.5 inches and 18-11
  • Freshman Joani Lico finished fourth in the discus with a throw of 117 feet 4 inches
  • Senior Mark Gragg was fourth in the 100 yard dash

After highlighting some of the events, the coach noted, “The freshmen continue to impress.  They're not just competing well against other freshmen; they are competing well against other teams' varsity athletes.  A few of them are the top ranked freshmen in Group 1:

  • Jovanni Salcfas 400 Hurdles #1 of Group 1 Freshmen and #7 of New Jersey Freshmen
  • Joani Lico Discus #1 of Group 1 Freshmen and #3 of NJ Freshmen
  • Patrick Machado and CJ Stavick #1 and #2 of Group 1 Freshmen
