SPRINGFIELD, NJ - The produce was bountiful at the first day of the Springfield Farmer’s Market. Three vendors set up and provided a wide range of vegetables and fruit.

There were two farm stands.  A new one was from Marchese Family Farm LLC, which specializes in all organic produce.  The other one is a returning farmer, The Country Stand Farm.

A new addition is Barbara’s Kitchen with jams, jellies and salsa.  Barbara is studying for a culinary degree and her offerings are quite tasty and unusual. For instance, her black cherry salsa and banana nut bread jam are some of the best sellers.

The Country Stand Farm has a wide variety of vegetables. The more unusual were the white and purple kohlrabi.  Garlic scapes, the flower bud of the garlic plant, are available for one more week only.

The number of shoppers was lower than expected due to the extended holiday week and the closing of the Department of Motor Vehicles across the street due to the shutdown of New Jersey Government.
