SPRINGFIELD, NJ — Over the summer, a fire broke out in the clubhouse at Baltusrol Golf Course, threatening to overwhelm the historic structure.
Thanks to the quick work of firefighters in Springfield and other towns in the county the blaze was contained. And at this week's township committee meeting, those firemen were honored for their work.
The firemen honored were captains Michael Mastroeni, Marc Corea and Victor Kostin, as well as Salvatore Cocuzza, Timothy Hydock and Joseph Cowper on Engine 2, and Thomas Balke, Stewart Jurczak Mark Russo and Michael Ridge on Ladder 1.
Normally, Fire Chief Carlo Palumbo makes the unit citations more of a private practice, but in an interview with TAPinto, explained that the location of the fire made a difference to him.
"It's a landmark, you know?" Palumbo said. "I grew up in this town, and [Baltusrol] is synonymous with Springfield, so it's a huge task with what they did and saved. I'm proud of them."
The plaque for the unit citatin is actually affixed to a slate tile from the roof of Baltusrol that was discared after the fire
