SPRINGFIELD, NJ – The Jonathan Dayton girls basketball team started strong and finished strong beating Elizabeth High School in the first round of the Union County Conference Tournament 67-24. The Bulldogs next game is at Westfield High School on Tuesday February 14. Westfield is the three seed in the NJSIAA North 2, Group 4 Sectional at the end of February.
The Bulldogs ran out to an 18-0 start at the end of the first quarter and increased their lead every other quarter. The entire team contributed and the numbers tell the story of a strong effort at both ends of the court. Besides scoring 67 points, the Bulldogs gathered in 47 rebounds, made 20 assists, took 19 steals and blocked eight shots. The point production consisted of 18 field goals, eight three point shots and seven free throws.
Junior guard Amanda Lau led the Bulldogs in scoring with 21 points followed by sophomore forward Sayre Brandstatter with 18 points. Others scorers included junior forward Capri Christmas with nine points, junior forward Nicolette Angelo with six points, junior guard Melanie Schickler with five points, sophomore guard Maggie Phillips with four, junior guard Zoe Frei with two points and sophomore forward Caity McTernan with two points.
On the boards, the Bulldogs were led by Christmas with eleven rebounds. McTernan had eight rebounds, while Angelo and Brandstatter had a seven each. Senior Captain Emma Ares pulled down three rebounds as did Lau and Schickler. Frei had two rebounds, sophomore guard Julia Cohen had one as did Phillips and junior guard Gabbie Petruzella.
On the swipe side, Brandstatter led the team with eight steals followed by Christmas with five. Lau led the team with five assists, while Angelo and Brandstatter both blocked three shots.
The win pushes Dayton's record to 14-5 for the season.
