TOMS RIVER, NJ — It was a cold and windy Friday night as the first place Jonathan Dayton High School Bulldogs (10-2) varsity ice hockey team took a road trip down the shore for a matchup against the Lacey High School Lions in Toms River.

But the Dayton offense was scorching hot like a summer beach day as junior left wing Gary Mignone continued his remarkable season by tallying four goals and two assists to help lead the Bulldogs to a 7-1 victory.

After a scoreless first period, Mignone exploded for three goals in a row to put the Bulldogs in front 3-0. Lacey cut the lead to 3-1, but the Bulldogs quickly responded with goals by senior captain Joe Triano, senior center Victor Velazquez, senior forward Lucas Minio and another goal by Mignone.

Velazquez (27 goals) and Mignone (26 goals) have been lighting up the scoreboard all season and the tandem sit at the top of the high school goal scorers list for the entire state, according to

Senior goalie Nick Facchini and junior defenseman Mark Cunningham silenced the Lacey attack throughout the night. Facchini finished the game with 19 saves.

Other players who supported the Dayton effort included senior Daniel Aldeniyi ; juniors Antonio Famiglietti, Jordy Frei, Jeremy Greiss and Harry Rachel; sophomores Gabriel Dematos, Giovanni Dersono, Zachary Silverstein and Giuseppe Wadowski; and freshman goalie Eric Serio.

Head Coach Brian Hayes will now get the Dayton squad ready for a big Saturday night matchup against the second-place Arthur L. Johnson High School Crusaders. Gametime for the ALJ matchup is 6:20 p.m. at Union Sports Arena. Prior to the game, an on-ice ceremony will be held to celebrate “Senior Night.”
