WEST ORANGE, NJ — On Friday night, the first place Jonathan Dayton High School Bulldogs (9-2) varsity ice hockey team continued their magical season with a 10-0 mercy victory over the West Orange Mountaineers. The victory secured the Bulldogs a spot in the “States” at the conclusion of this season. It is the second year in a row that Dayton has qualified for state tournament play.
Dayton’s high-powered offense wasted no time in lighting up the scoreboard against West Orange.
Senior center Victor Velazquez and junior left wing Gary Mignone currently sit as the top two high school goal scorers in the entire state, according to NJ.com.
Velazquez now has 26 goals on the season after scoring four goals and an assist against West Orange. Mignone’s hat trick and assist in the game bumped his total to 22 goals on the season.
Senior Brenden Smith netted two goals and added an assist. Sophomore Giuseppe Wadowski rounded out the scoring with his first goal of the season.
Senior captain Joe Triano, junior defenseman Mark Cunningham, and junior forward Jeremy Greiss also jumped into the offensive barrage against West Orange. Triano had four assists, Cunningham had three assists, and Greiss had an assist on the night.
Senior goalie Nick Facchini (8-1) made 14 saves to earn the shutout in net.
The lopsided victory enabled Head Coach Brian Hayes’ entire squad of skaters to play a majority of the game, including senior Daniel Aldenyi, juniors Antonio Famiglietti, Jordy Frei and Harry Rachel, and sophomores Giovanni Dersono and Zachary Silverstein. Back-up goalies sophomore Gabriel Dematos and freshman Eric Serio also supported the effort.
Next Friday, Jan. 17, the Bulldogs travel down the Parkway to Toms River to face off against Lacey High School (0-8).
On Saturday, Jan. 18, the Bulldogs will celebrate “Senior Night” in a huge matchup against the second-place Arthur L. Johnson High School Crusaders (7-2). Gametime for the ALJ matchup is 6:20 p.m. at Union Sports Arena.
