SECAUCUS, NJ — One week ago, the Jonathan Dayton High School Bulldogs varsity ice hockey team (12-4-1) dropped a tough contest against the Kearny High School Kardinals (8-7-1), who celebrated wildly on the Dayton home ice.

But last night, the Bulldogs got some sweet revenge by topping the Kardinals 2-1 in a physical battle at the Secaucus Ice Rink.

Senior goalie Nick Facchini was the top star of the game as he turned aside 31 of 32 shots. He also played his best hockey in the third period when Kearny made a strong push to tie the game.

Senior center Victor Velazquez (33 goals, 17 assists) continued his state-leading goal scoring pace by scoring both Dayton goals on the night. Velazquez was boosted by assists from junior left wing Gary Mignone (27 goals, 18 assists), senior defenseman captain Joe Triano (7 goals, 23 assists), and junior forward Jeremy Greiss (2 goals, 8 assists).

Head Coach Brian Hayes will now get the Bulldogs ready for the NJIIHL McMullen Division Playoffs. Dayton’s first round game will be determined in the next few days and their first matchup will most-likely be next Friday night.

The Bulldogs received some additional good news last night as it appears that senior forward Brendan Smith and junior defenseman Mark Cunningham may return from the injured list before the playoffs begin. If Smith and Cunningham are available to play, it would be the first time in more than a month that the Bulldogs high-powered starting lineup will all hit the ice at the same time
