ROSELLE, NJ — The Jonathan Dayton High School Bulldogs (2-1) varsity ice hockey team won its second game in row with a 3-1 victory over The Frisch School Cougars (0-3) at the Warinanco Park Ice Skating Center in Roselle.
The Bulldogs showed great patience as they overcame the Cougars defensive style that kept the game scoreless through the first period.
Midway through the second period, junior forward Jeremy Greiss fought through the Cougars defense to score his first goal of the season to put the Bulldogs up 1-0. Senior captain and right wing Joe Triano and junior left wing Gary Mignone earned the assists on Greiss’ goal.
In the third period, junior defensemen Mark Cunningham blasted a slapshot from just inside the blueline to put the Bulldogs up 2-0. Senior center Victor Velazquez was credited with an assist on the goal.
Just 19 seconds later, Mignone continued his sizzling hot start by notching his fifth goal of the season to increase the Bulldogs lead to 3-0. Triano earned the assist on Mignone’s goal.
Senior goalie Nick Facchini made 20 saves but lost his shutout bid with just four minutes to play in the game on a goal by Frisch’s Aiden Sholomon. It was Facchini’s first win of the young season.
Although they did not make it onto the scoring sheet, seniors Brenden Smith and Lucas Minio, junior Antonio Nacci, and sophomore Giuseppe Wadowski played key roles in the on-ice battle.
Other players who supported the effort included senior Daniel Aldenyi, juniors Antonio Famiglietti and Harry Rachel, sophomores Gabriel Dematos and Zachary Silverstein, and freshman Eric Serio.
Head Coach Brian Hayes and Assistant Coaches Jordan Fabi and Michael O’Brien will now lead the Bulldogs into a tough contest against Arthur L. Johnson High School on Friday night. Gametime is at 6:00 p.m. at the Warinanco Park Ice Skating Center.
