SPRINGFIELD, NJ — A sweet treat awaited residents yesterday afternoon at the Chisholm Community Center, as Michael Scalera, a local insurance agent and co-chair of the Springfield Business Improvement District gave out free ice cream to passersby.
Scalera was at the truck for the duration of its stay, and said that the idea came top down from the corporate offices, but that he was happy to take the ball and run with it.
"Well originally State Farm mentioned the idea of this weekend, to celebrate with the local businesses or get out there and celebrate Labor Day Weekend, and they said 'let's do something, we'll use ice cream as the theme.' They were recommending that we either go to an ice cream eatery or rent a truck," Scalera said.
He added, "I said, what a great way, so my team and I, we called a couple companies up, and we were able to work it out with the recreation department, where we can give away free ice cream to all the kids or families in the area."
Scalera said that everyone should connect with their community, and that it's something he likes to do. He also noted that the residents of Springfield have been so good to him, and this was a small way of saying thank you in return.
One of the residents out enjoying ice cream was Melissa Howard, who was there with her children. The Springfield resident said the moment was a nice chance to get outside and enjoy one last burst of summer.
"Because of everything with COVID, I figured it would be a perfect opportunity to have them come and socialize a little bit, distanced of course," she said.
Howard also said it was a fun way for her and her family to kick off Labor Day Weekend, because as she said, she "does not have any other plans."
