SPRINGFIELD, NJ - The Springfield Township Committee Announced at Tuesday's meeting that Springfield has been selected as part of the "Union County Means Green" grant program.

The grants, designed to help communities cultivate green spaces in town will go toward helping maintain the community garden in town. As part of the grant process, Springfield received $1,500 to use towards that end.

On the county website, the mission statement of the grant is to "provide new opportunities for improved nutrition, education, recreation, social activities and volunteer service in local neighborhoods through the experience of growing local food."

As part of the conditions of the grant, Springfield must agree to donate a portion of their harvest back to the community. Additionally, the municipality must also enroll in Come Grow With Us, a community garden information and resource sharing network which is run by Groundwork Elizabeth.
