Springfield's Dayton Baseball: New Providence Shuts Down Bulldogs to End State Tournament Run

NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ – Junior pitcher Ryan Sherman pitched a three-hitter with one walk and four strikeouts and junior Chris Kubas had two doubles with three RBI and a run scored to power rival and neighbor top-seeded New Providence to a 9-0 victory over eighth-seeded Dayton in the quarterfinals of the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 2, Group 1 tournament in New Providence last Thursday.

The Pioneers led 6-0 after two innings, highlighted by a four-run second inning, to take control.

New Providence (17-6) has won three straight and four of its last five games and will host fifth-seeded Hoboken in Tuesday’s semifinals with first pitch slated for 4 p.m.

Dayton (10-7) has dropped three of its last four and has four losses in its last 14 games.

Two games remain in the 2018 campaign for Dayton, including a rematch with New Providence on Wednesday (see more info below) and a make-up game at Rahway on Friday with first pitch set for 4 p.m.

Senior Night rescheduled

The Bulldogs’ Senior Night game against New Providence at TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater Township, home of the Somerset Patriots, is set for Wednesday, May 30 at 6 p.m.
