SOMERSET, NJ – Jonathan Dayton Boys Track finished the season with the Group 1 State Championships last week.  The final day was Saturday.

According to Coach Matt VanDueren, “We had another day with hot weather and senior Fabian Mestanza again highlighted one of our championship meets.”  He added “…the group championships are the top six from each of the four sections.”

About Mestanza’s performance, the coach said, “Fabian won his heat in the mile to finish eighth overall with a personal best of four minutes and 35 seconds.  The race went out pretty quick, but he stayed calm and won his heat and was able to get a time better than a few of the kids in the seeded heat.  He raced it like a veteran, where some kids might panic in going out in 63 seconds for the first lap, which is a 4:12 pace, Fabian stayed calm and focused and took the lead with 200 meters to go and closed really nicely.  Fabian also finished 13th in the 800-meter race.”

Coach VanDuersen then highlighted a few more events saying, “Sophomore Joani Lico finished in 16th and 17th in the discus and shot put, respectively.  Junior Adam Cohen finished 19th in the 3200 meter run finals with a time of 10:42.31.”.

The Bulldogs started with over 50 members on the team.  Over 45 should return next year.
