St. Mary's High School Launches Hall of Fame

ELIZABETH, NJ—St. Mary’s High School of Elizabeth will induct its first class of hall of famers at their inaugural Hall of Fame Dinner and Ceremony to be held on Saturday, June 24, at the Gran Centurions, 440 Madison Hill Road, Clark. The event will get under way at 1:00 p.m.

Tickets to the event, which will honor a group of individuals who were a significant part of the school’s history, are priced at $65 per person.

The inductees for the inaugural class include academic, athletic, civic, distinguished American, humanitarian, and meritorious accomplishments.

Those slated to be inducted include former administrators Janet Malko, Sister Mary Matilda Zegers and Charles Canavan.

Hubie Brown, a member of the National Basketball Association Hall of Fame, who is a former NBA coach and currently a color commentator on nationally broadcast NBA games will also be inducted, along with Al LoBalbo, the legendary basketball coach at St. Mary’s, and Jerry Bechtle, an All-American Basketball Player at St. Mary’s who went on to serve in the United States Secret Service where he guarded seven presidents in his career.

Also being inducted will be former Elizabeth Mayor Thomas G. Dunn, Sr., who served seven terms in city hall. As well as Patrick Murray, who graduated from both St. Mary’s Elementary and High School and went on to become CEO of Dresser Inc. and serves on several major boards across the United States. Murray is currently Chairman of the Board of Regents at both St. Mary’s and Seton Hall University.

The list of honorees continues with Thomas Sharkey, Sr., the highly successful baseball coach who along with Charles Feeney, also being inducted, made significant donations to St. Mary’s and are have widely recognized for their humanitarian efforts.

Plainfield Man Dead, Scotch Plains Woman Critically Injured in Shooting

PLAINFIELD, NJ — A shooting that left a Plainfield man dead and a Scotch Plains woman seriously injured in Plainfield late Saturday is under investigation, acting Union County Prosecutor Michael A. Monahan announced Sunday.

The deceased victim has been identified as Michael Welsh, 34, of Plainfield.
