SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ - This year's  New Jersey Symphony Orchestra’s concert was conducted by Sameer Patel the associate conductor of the Sand Diego Symphony. Originally scheduled to be an outdoor show, the concert was played indoors at the Scotch Plains – Fanwood High School auditorium this year due to the heavy rain storms. Those in attendance were greeted in front of the auditorium were with free paper fans and information about dozens of other free events throughout Union County.

The Orchestra started out by playing the Star-Spangled Banner before Mr. Patel introduced the theme of the music that would be played that night as “A Journey Across America”, separated into five sets spanning the musical spectrum from classics such as Dvorak’s 9th symphony “The New World” finale which was also the first piece played, to John Williams Lincoln Soundtrack Suite, and classical renditions of Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the USA and Born to Run.

During the intermission, a member of the orchestra who played a large woodwind instrument went to the edge of the stage and explained his instrument to a group of kids.  Near the end of the show, the orchestra played the United States Armed Forces anthems and those in the crowd were invited to stand during their respective branch of service to be honored for their service to the United States.  As each anthem’s branch was being announced the audience applauded those who stood up.  At the end of the show after a resounding round of applause the orchestra played an encore song; it was the patriotic classic “The Washington Post March”.
